Two Harbors: Catalina’s West End Village

Two Harbors on the west end of Catalina Island

Two Harbors, or as the locals call it, “The Isthmus,” is a little village at the opposite end of Catalina Island from Avalon, and has a yearly occupancy of a few hundred residents. Not many visitors to the Island make it down to the West End, with the exception of boaters and those camping at one of the numerous campgrounds that make up the majority of available accommodations at the Isthmus. What most don’t know is that you can take a shuttle bus from Avalon, stopping at the Airport in the Sky, and head through the interior of the Island to the Isthmus. It’s a personal favorite day trip of many locals, as you truly leave behind the hustle and bustle and enter the tranquility of the quaint village.

There are tons of local history at Two Harbors (a Civil War Barrack turned Yacht Club and the Banning House, to name a few), a restaurant and snack bar to grab a bite to eat on the patio with ocean views, and numerous water activities to fill your afternoon.  Not many people make the scenic trip through the Island to get there, or down the Island’s coastline if you go by water, but it is a great day trip that lets you explore the beauty of the Island most don’t get to see.
