The First Catalina Air Show

Celebrating 100 Years of Aviation on Catalina Island: The First Catalina Air Show and Festival

Long before visitors made the trip from the mainland to Catalina Island on the modern day, high-speed passenger vessels, guests flew to the Island on seaplanes or sailed over on the steamship. The faster means of travel, aviation has a long history on Catalina and is celebrating a hundred years of overseas flights to the Island this year. With the first passenger flights beginning in 1919, seaplane service to the Island thrived for years, and with the opening of our Airport-In-The-Sky in 1946, visitors began to arrive through the interior of the Island as well.

This weekend, September 29th & 30th, the Catalina Air Show aims to educate both local residents and visitors alike on Catalina’s rich aviation history and the role it has played in tourism and the daily life of Avalon residents, who still rely on it to receive daily freight shipments. With the Air Show happening right outside the Avalon Bay breakwater, all will have a spectacular view from Crescent Avenue (where the corresponding festival is to be held).  Aircraft will also be displayed at the Airport-In-The Sky, a beautiful and fun thirty-minute drive from Avalon through the interior of the Island. This will be a great time for all, whether you’re a pilot, an aviation enthusiast or an observer simply enjoying the show!
