CIVR Blog: An Event for Every Season

An event for every season — and every interest

One of the many reasons to plan an offseason Southern California getaway are the many Catalina Island events planned for the winter months.

Shop at home: Catalina Island kicks off the holiday season with Shop at Home Night on Dec. 7. Featuring shopping discounts, prize drawings and strolling carolers, Shop at Home allows visitors to get in the holiday spirit with an island atmosphere instead of mainland mall madness. Avalon’s tree lighting and a visit from Santa round out the evening.

Holiday open house: The Catalina Island Museum is inviting both the local and visiting community to its holiday open house on Dec. 13. With free admission, a special tasting in the new Harbor Room, plus discounts in the museum store, it’s sure to be a festive evening.

New Years gala: Why not ring in the new year at the world famous Casino Ballroom? This gala has become a Southern California tradition, with live music, a delicious buffet and midnight champagne toast.

Underwater cleanup: As hard as it is to believe looking at Catalina’s crystal clear waters, there is trash in the harbor. Most of the littering is inadvertent, which is what makes the Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup so entertaining. In addition to the usual bottles and cans, sunglasses and cellphones, the cleanup’s scuba divers regularly pull up bizarre finds as well as the occasional treasure. Scheduled for Feb. 22, 2014, it’s the only time of the year that scuba diving is allowed in Avalon Bay.

An Evening With Oscar: Catalina’s long history with Hollywood makes it the ideal place to celebrate the Academy Awards and each year the Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation does just that at its An Evening With Oscar fundraiser. The event features a tasting menu from Avalon’s finest restaurants, a silent auction and live music as well as the Oscar telecast, all surrounded by the elegance of the Casino Ballroom. The black tie optional event will be held Sunday, March 2.
