Descanso Beach on Catalina Island
Catalina Island has dozens of beautiful beaches. One of the most popular with residents and visitors alike is Descanso Beach. Spanish for “place of rest,” Descanso offers a range of activities for both relaxation and adventure.
One of the things that makes Descanso unique is bar service on the sand. As a private beach club, Descanso is one of the only California beaches where it is legal to serve cocktails. Buffalo Milk, Descanso Destroyers and Mai Tai are frequently ordered on this beautiful palm shaded stretch of sand. Located just past the Casino Building, Descanso Beach has a storied history on Catalina Island. For decades, it was the home of the luxurious Hotel St. Catherine, which was one of the most decadent accommodation options on the island for generations. Although the hotel was demolished in the 1960s, remnants of its foundation can still be discovered today.
Snorkeling, kayaking, snuba and rock walls are just a few of the adventures available at Descanso Beach, which also features dining and massage. Private cabanas and chaise lounges can be rented for the day.
Descanso’s future includes a 1,300 square foot club house that will welcome weddings and other special events with ocean-view meeting and event spaces. Three Presidential Cabanas will have luxurious amenities for the discerning traveler. And a new Descanso Fresh espresso bar will offer quick bites and gourmet coffee treats. The $8-million renovation is expected to debut in September.
