An Evening with Oscar brings Hollywood glamour to Catalina Island

For decades, Catalina Island was Hollywood’s playground. With its proximity to Los Angeles it was only natural that location scouts turned to the island and Catalina began appearing in films before sound did. Only occasionally appearing as itself, the island and the waters around it have stood in for the eastern seaboard, the tropical Pacific and the Caribbean.

While location scouts used the island as a backdrop for the action, Hollywood’s elite created their own action, finding Catalina irresistible for fun and frolic. John Wayne, Johnny Weismuller and Joan Crawford were just a few of the Hollywood superstars who made regular visits to Catalina Island.

These days, Hollywood stars still visit and Catalina Island continues to be a frequent location for both films and commercials. It seems only appropriate then, that Hollywood’s biggest event is honored in the island’s most lavish venue. An Evening with Oscar brings Hollywood glamour to the Casino Ballroom while supporting the Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation. Oscar balloting, silent and live auctions and a gourmet meal will provide entertainment during the evening, which also features a red carpet arrival and the Academy Awards telecast on the island’s largest screen. An Evening with Oscar is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 26 and makes a perfect excuse for a getaway to Catalina Island.
