A Glimpse Under the Sea: The Garibaldi

If you’ve gone snorkeling or looked in the water after disembarking the ferry, you might have seen a vibrant orange fish in the water—the Garibaldi. These beautiful fish are best known as the California state fish, and the best way to get up close and personal with these fish is to go snorkeling or diving.  We love to check these fish out at Lover’s Cove, the left side of Descanso Beach, or the kelp forests down the coast from Avalon. Snorkeling and diving, if your certified, are great ways to get familiar with Catalina’s abundant marine life, and don’t forget your underwater camera—the fish are quite photogenic!

People Actually Live Here?

avalon

(A beautiful place to call home)

If you ask Islanders what the most frequent question visitors ask once they find out they live on Catalina it will probably be, “People actually live here?” and then the next question is always “So what’s it like to live on an Island?”  We all have our own standard responses we don’t give much thought to—“it’s awesome,” “it’s definitely different” or “everyone knows everyone and it’s a friendly community.”  What many of us have found is we don’t realize how unique and special it is to call Catalina Island home until we move away for college, new jobs or life experiences.

Not everyone has a beach at the bottom of their street, a view of the bay from their living room, or get to hang out “in the hills” on their day off, but we are lucky enough to and we wouldn’t have it any other way!  Most importantly, where else is a golf cart the common form of transportation (a valid drivers license is required to drive one) and there are no stoplights? Sometimes we get “island fever,” but luckily we are only an hour boat ride away from the “mainland.”

Many of us that call Catalina home are second, third or fourth generation “Islanders.” Many of our families have been friends for years and we’ve all grown up together. At Avalon High School’s graduation (we have a K-12 school with around 800 students), it’s tradition to have the “original kindergartners” all sing a song or do a dance – it’s amazing to see how many graduates have lived on Catalina their whole lives.  Traveling for sporting events is like a mini-vacation for the students of Avalon High School – we travel to Los Angeles or Orange County to play our opponents and every other year those teams travel to Catalina to play and experience island life for a weekend.  Students in the elementary and middle school often travel to Los Angeles for field trips to museums and cultural experiences.

While living on Catalina is pretty great, it isn’t without its challenges. For “typical” everyday errands, we often have to take a boat to accomplish them. We’ll cram as much as we can into the time we get off the boat until we head back to the Island at the end of the day—doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, appointments, etc. We plan our day around the boat schedule, and you can always spot someone who lives on Catalina in line at the boat terminal heading home—we’ll be the ones with tons of bags carrying as much as we can back to the Island.

It’s a very close-knit, safe community where it feels like everyone knows everyone – we’re big on waving to each other as we pass in the streets, and we always come together to support each other through community events and fundraisers. It’s a privilege to call Catalina Island home, and if you haven’t already fallen in love with its charm, we hope you do on your next trip!

Make ‘em Laugh is the theme for the museum’s Silent Film Benefit  this year. The combination of a majestic movie palace, a talented accompanist – Robert D. Salisbury, and four comedy “shorts” featuring the silent film era’s greatest comedians, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin, add up to a rare opportunity to experience the Casino’s Avalon Theatre the way it was originally intended.

For more information and to purchase tickets, call 310-510-2414 or visit the Silent Film event page at www.CatalinaMuseum.org.

Avalon Celebrates It’s Centennial

Avalon Bay circa 1914

(Avalon Bay circa 1914 c/o The Catalina Island Museum)

June 26, 2013 is a very special day for Avalon—it’s our centennial! But why celebrate for only a day, when an occasion of this magnitude deserves at least a week’s worth of events?  As if the city knew we’d be asking this question, they’ve delivered with an itinerary filled with a week’s worth of events for the whole family to enjoy, from live bands to a festival on front street (Crescent Avenue) and a movie night on the beach.  For a full list of events that will be taking place throughout the week of June 20-26, click here.

Avalon is a special place to us all, whether you grew up in this amazing and supportive community, have made the charming “city” your second home, visit every year or have only been once—it’s safe to say you have probably fallen under its enchanting spell. Throughout these past 100 years, Avalon has played host to the Chicago Cubs spring training, been the home of Marilyn Monroe (when she was still Norma Jeane) and the location for numerous films and inspiration for classic songs such as “26 Miles Across The Sea.” The Catalina Island Museum does an amazing job of showcasing our unique Island history and is a must see when you are here.

Many families have called Avalon home since its beginning, and it isn’t uncommon for many students attending Avalon Schools to be a 3rd or 4th generation “Islander.”  While we’ve seen Avalon go through numerous renovations and changes over the years, the landmarks we all know and love have retained their charm, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.  With the milestone less than three months away, we are already getting excited.  This is going to be a legendary celebration you won’t want to miss!

Steeped in Island History: Toyon Bay

Toyon Bay view from ocean sm

(Vintage photo of Toyon Bay c/o Catalina Island Museum)

Catalina Island has a rich and vibrant history dating back to Native American settlements and European explorers (check out the newly remodeled—and amazing—Catalina Island Museum to learn more), and one of the coves just down the coast from Avalon is Toyon Bay. Nearly every cove on the leeward side of Catalina Island (the side Avalon is located on) is leased as a youth/family camp or to a yacht club, with one the most well known being Toyon Bay. From it’s original Native American inhabitants, to a boys boarding school in the early 1900’s, to a training camp during World War II, then a resort and now as the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI), Toyon Bay is steeped in colorful and exciting Island history.

The structures from its time as a boy’s boarding school are still used today, including the dorms and dining hall. New structures have been added, but Native American artifacts can still be found periodically in the dirt surrounding the camp. If you happen to purchase and read Haunted Catalina during your next Island vacation, there are quite a few supernatural accounts centered on Toyon Bay that are very interesting and provide for great campfire stories.

Since 1979, Toyon Bay has been CIMI and has been educating middle and high schoolers about marine life and nature. Many students who have attended Avalon Schools have spent a few days at the camp during their school years learning about the Island paradise they are lucky enough to call home, and it is a school and summer camp destination for students from across the United States. Attending CIMI is a special experience that fuses together education, Island history, exciting activities and new friendships—it’s a life changing experience that celebrates all the aspects we love about Catalina Island.

Seeking Warmer Weather?

Looking to stow the snow boots and escape the frigid winter temperatures? Lucky for you Catalina Island is conveniently located right off the coast of Los Angeles!  Experience a beautiful Southern California winter with the simplicity of island life, and leave the traffic jams on the mainland. Getting around Avalon is easy—you can walk everywhere, and many Avalon Homes and all Hamilton Cove villas offer complimentary use of the homeowner’s golf cart (locals favorite form of transportation).

With the absence of the summer crowds, you can try out the numerous activities you’ve always wanted to do but steered clear of.  The golf course is open year round, the recent rain has turned the hillsides a vibrant green and perfect for exploring on one the many hiking trails, or catch the latest movie at the famous Avalon Theater.  These are just a few enticing activities to fill your time while you stay in a vacation rental for a week, a month or two.  We offer great rates for those looking to extend their stay and enjoy Island life for a month or more.

Everyone wants to know what it’s like living on an island, so why not try it?  We try our best to describe it, but to really know how special and unique it is we recommend you try it for yourself—even for a short time–while you wait for the snow to melt at home!
