Vacation Rental Summary
This home has been upgraded and shows nicely. The maids did a great job cleaning, floors were washed, etc. The negative was the master bdrm needs a queen size bed, the double for a mature adult couple is very uncomfortable. The queen air mattress leaks, and can not be used more then 2 hours. I called the office on this, before we went over, because I read it on the reviews. I hoped they would correct it, but I don't think vacation rentals read the reviews. When it deflated on my one granddaughter who is 13, I called the office and complained, but they did not do anything about it. I talked to a live person. I did not complain more because my granddaughter left. Also, be prepared for a very loud busy street in the summer with all the golf carts, trucks, buses. I hate to sound negative though, it is a beautiful home, just needs the beds taken care of.
I am not a person who complains much, but I have to be honest and say this rental was poorly equipped and smelled funny. There was a thick layer of grime and spots of old ketchup on the outdoor furniture, the outdoor shower was filled with spider webs and contained a stack of moldy plastic chairs. Old inflatables covered in mold littered the outdoor area behind the house. Inside the house, there were no microwavable bowls except for one large mixing bowel. There were only six ceramic dinner plates. There was a collection of oddly sized melamine plates and bowls too shallow to hold cereal or soup. The pots and pans had much of the nonstick coating scraped off. There were no hotpads or trivets, one tiny cutting board. The towels were worn, rough and thin and at least one had holes. The mattresses on the beds were old and lumpy. In a word, the place was unloved. It's hard to imagine the owners ever staying there. Also, I recommend being prepared to spend $65 per couple on a permit if you want to venture outside the town of avalon into the conservation area.
We went to Catalina for Memorial Day weekend this year and we had 8 adults in 225 Claressa. The house is so much bigger and cuter than the pictures online make it seem. The living area is really large and comfy, and all 8 of us were able to sit in there and talk or watch TV. Also, the kitchen table was big enough for us to all sit around and have family-style dinners and the kitchen was functional (small and not enough pans, but functional). The down sides that we experienced were: the rental office had moved and did not inform us so we had to go on a scavenger hunt to find them, the house has 1 room with a full bed, 2 rooms with bunk beds, and a queen size air mattress. It may not have been the best choice for 3 couples and 2 friends. My husband and I slept in one of the bunk bed rooms and the bunk beds were ok- if a little hard- but super squeaky! The couple in the next room heard us every time we turned over! The bunk bed rooms are also super tiny- so prepare yourself for that and you will be ok. All in all it was a great rental. So close to all of the activity, 5 minute walk (at most) to the grocery store, restaurants and bars. I would stay in this house again, but maybe I would take the big room this time...
Stayed for a MTB event with 6 buddies. Everyone was comfortable. The air mattress leaks but the couch turned out to be very comfortable. Packing 8 people in would be very tight. 6 was the perfect amount. Avalon is not a big city but the house is only a couple blocks from grocery, nightlife, and great restaurants. I highly recommend this house and will seek it out again. Turned out a friend stayed here the year prior without me knowing when I booked and they liked it too. Has an outdoor shower great for washing scuba and beach equipment.
