Things to do on Catalina Island

This time of year can be busy with weddings, graduations and end-of-school-year parties. Why not take a break from June madness with a relaxing getaway on Catalina Island? With warmer temperatures and a full range of activities both on and off the water, this is the ideal month to visit.

Each Wednesday 7-9am, the city’s Recreation Department hosts a Kids Fishing Derby. With awards and accolades for biggest fish and strangest fish, this tournament is all about having fun and getting the kids excited about the outdoors. Bring your own rod & reel or dropline (or purchase on the Green Pleasure Pier) the fishing starts at 7 a.m. at the end of Green Pleasure Pier.

The City of Avalon also offers one of Catalina Island’s most enduring – and endearing – family fun traditions. Each Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. the city hosts Summer Beach Bingo at the South Beach lifeguard stand. Bingo cards are only $1 and winners receive some great local prizes.

Father’s Day is another great reason to visit Catalina. With full kitchens for preparing Dad’s favorite meal and plenty of room for the whole family, a rental on Catalina is an ideal home base for exploring everything that the island has to offer. Whether your father (or father figure) is up for a relaxing day on the beach or a day-long pursuit of some of the Pacific’s most challenging game fish, Avalon has something for every dad.
