Silent please

For nearly three decades, the Catalina Island Museum has celebrated Avalon’s iconic theatre by bringing back the silent film era. Each year, the museum showcases a classic from the days before the talkies, showcasing the magnificent movie palace in all its glory.

For the 27th annual Silent Film Benefit, the Catalina Island Museum staff has chosen City Lights, the Charlie Chaplin masterpiece, widely considered one of the 100 best films ever. Actually created a couple of years after the advent of talkies, City Lights is still revered as one of the best of its genre.

Traditionally accompanied by the Avalon Casino’s historic Page Organ, this year the Silent Film Benefit will be accompanied by a 39-piece orchestra, led by Grammy Award-winning conductor Richard Kaufman.

Tickets are on sale now for the Silent Film Benefit, which is scheduled for May 17. Museum members can purchase tickets for $15 and the general public can purchase tickets for $18. Those who attend in period costume will be able to purchase tickets for $9. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumed couple and individual. For more information, call (310) 510-2414 or visit the museum’s website.
