It often seems as if there are two Catalina islands: the relative hustle and bustle of Avalon and the rest of Santa Catalina Island. Two Harbors, at the opposite end of the island from Avalon, exemplifies that dichotomy. Less than half a mile wide, the Isthmus is framed by the two harbors that give it its nickname: Cat Harbor, a long narrow strip of water approached from the windward side of the island and Isthmus Cove, which faces the mainland.

Much more rustic and isolated than Avalon, Two Harbors provides a wealth of opportunities for outdoor adventures. Hiking, mountain biking and kayaking are popular activities as are stand up paddling, scuba diving and snorkeling. Isthmus beach provides a wide white sand retreat while the mudflats of Cat Harbor are great for bird watching and exploring. A major Southern California boating destination, the community is home to a general store, snack stand, restaurant and a bar as well as campsites and a bed and breakfast.

Spending time in Two Harbors is a vivid reminder to slow down, relax and appreciate the things around you. The Catalina ferry makes regular stops or for the more adventurous, an hour-long bus ride provides spectacular views of the island’s vistas and wildlife during the trip.

Visiting the isthmus of Catalina Island is a truly unique thing to do in Southern California and it just got easier.  Catalina Island Vacation Rentals now offer two spectacular properties that will give you the opportunity to experience this rustic gem for yourself.
