Like many things on Catalina Island, going to the movies is a just a bit different here. Rather than a giant multiplex with half a dozen or more offerings, the movies – or rather movie – involves a trip the world-famous Catalina Casino, the bottom floor of which is the Avalon Theatre.
This awe-inspiring building features an array of architectural and artistic marvels, including world-renowned murals both inside and out. Once you are inside, you are whisked back in time to the golden age of movie palaces, where the surroundings are nearly as fascinating as the film.
John Gabriel Beckman’s murals enchant you no matter how many times you’ve seen them. Filled with mystical and exotic creatures, the murals are inspired by California’s early history. Since they were completed in 1929, the scenes and creatures have inspired paintings, jewelry and tattoos. The colorful murals surround the Avalon Theatre on Catalina Island and are well worth the price of admission no matter what movie is playing on the screen.
Speaking of movies, Avalon gets one a week – if you don’t like what’s playing, you just have to hope you’ll like the movie the following week. The movie also only plays at one time – 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults with a special $10 showing on Tuesdays.
