Last June, the Catalina Island Museum opened its long awaiting new facility. With its early California architecture and expansive exhibit spaces, the Ada Blanche Wrigley Schreiner Catalina Island Museum is a fitting home for Catalina Island’s vast and varied history. From native islanders to the Chicago Cubs and from early settlers to the golden era of Hollywood, the museum is place to explore again and again.
Thanks to a unique series of temporary exhibits, the museum is also a great place to discover art and culture from around the world. For the next four months one of those exhibits will spotlight the Art Nouveau period – an art style that heavily influenced the murals in the Avalon Theatre. PAN, last century’s first art magazine, brought together some of the greatest artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Art Nouveau and Graphic Art: The PAN Publications, 1895 – 1900, showcases the magazine’s influence on the burgeoning graphic arts movement.
Also opening in November will be Bon Voyage! Posters from the Golden Age of Travel. These original French travel posters spotlight a younger age, when travel by rail and sea was the order of the day. Bon Voyage will be on view in the museum’s SAPAP Gallery.
