catalina island museum under construction

One of Catalina Island’s most significant construction projects is rapidly approaching completion – and when it does, both Catalina Island visitors and residents will have a new landmark. The Catalina Island Museum will be celebrating the grand opening of its new building in early summer.

Completed over the last few years, the Ada Blanche Wrigley Schreiner Catalina Island Museum includes more than 18,000 feet of exhibit space as well as several spots for special events. Its white façade, cupola and red tile roof are reminiscent of the Catalina Casino, the museum’s former home. Within the building, which is located on Metropole Avenue, is an atrium, amphitheater and galleries for both permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Beginning on June 17, museum staff have several events planned to commemorate the grand opening, including ribbon cuttings, gallery talks and a screening in the new facility’s outdoor amphitheater. Tibetian monks, Bettie Page and Plein Air painting are just some of the icons, cultures and activities that will be spotlighted during the museum’s grand opening celebrations.

Admission to the new Catalina Island Museum is $7.50 for adults, $5 for seniors and military members. Children under 15 and museum members are free. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day.
