Catalina Island

For more than a century, families have been flocking to Catalina Island every summer. With mild weather, charming seaside ambiance and a wealth of activities, Santa Catalina has been a magnet for all ages – especially from mid-June to September. Here are just a few of our favorite summertime activities with kids on Catalina Island.

Beach Bingo: Every Tuesday and Thursday, the City of Avalon sponsors Beach Bingo on South Beach. The fun starts at 6 p.m. and bingo cards are $1. Local prizes are awarded to the winners. Beach bingo begins June 28.

Kids Fishing Derby: Test your skills against the sea every Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. at the end of the green Pleasure Pier. Young anglers compete for biggest fish, smallest fish and – of course – strangest fish. The derby starts June 29 and fishing licenses are not required.

The Beach: What’s a seaside resort with a beach? Sand castle building, swimming and sunning are all encouraged, but taking time to relax and reconnect as a family are required. Whether in Avalon or at Two Harbors, you’ll find plenty of sea and sand.

The playground: Avalon has several parks with playgrounds, including People’s Park near City Hall; City Park (known by locals as Machine Gun Park for the World War II gunnery emplacement near its entrance) near the corner of Crescent Avenue and Pebbly Beach Road; and the playset for the younger set on Pebbly Beach Road. Staying at Hamilton Cove? Don’t miss the playground near the beach. Two Harbors also has a playground just across from the old Little Red Schoolhouse.
